Enjoy outdoor theatre at Bryngarw Country Park

There’s nothing quite like watching a classic play in the great outdoors, especially when the backdrop is as scenic as Bryngarw Country Park. A far more laid-back experience than traditional theatre, there’s something particularly special about being part of an alfresco audience on a summer’s day, with plenty of room to have a picnic.

Outdoor performances at Bryngarw have proved to be some of our most popular events for many years. From family favourites the kids will adore, to highbrow classics and innovative new productions from some of the UK’s best theatre companies, we’ve hosted some epic open-air shows in our time. And this summer is no exception, with an exciting line-up throughout August.

Family Favourites

If you’re looking for something the whole family might enjoy, why not come along to one of our child-friendly performances?

Tue 2 Aug 2022 – THE RELUCTANT DRAGON. A lovely story of friendship and acceptance, with a good helping of daring knights and poetry-loving dragons, this classic comic tale is sure to keep the kids giggling.

Wed 17 Aug 2022 – PETER RABBIT. A charming version of the timeless Beatrix Potter story that’s suitable for everyone from tiny tots to nostalgic grown-ups.

Wed 24 Aug 2022 – AWFUL AUNTIE. A rambunctious adaptation of David Walliams’s modern classic with a few owls, ghosts, escapes, motorbikes and some tiddlywinks thrown in for good measure. Age guide 7+

Wed 31st Aug 2022 – CIRCUS RAJ. Fun, FREE and suitable for all ages this vibrant, lively production features aerial performers, acrobats, giant puppets, music, drama and intrigue that will leave the whole family on the edge of their seats.

Timeless Classics

If something a little more grown up is your cup of tea, we have a couple of true British classics to look forward to:

Tue 9 Aug 2022 – IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. If you’re a fan of Oscar Wilde, don’t miss out on this performance of his celebrated comedy caper, complete with lashings of tea and muffins, elegant insults and epic Bunburying.

Tue 30 Aug 2022 – JANE EYRE. A highly original adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic set against the backdrop of a carnival, featuring acrobats, jaw-dropping jugglers and the awe-inspiring escape artist Jane Eyre.

Our top tips for enjoying an open-air performance at Bryngarw Country Park:

We all know that the weather can be changeable here in Wales, so it’s best to dress for all eventualities. Wearing several layers is a good idea so you can peel things off if it’s hot and sunny, or put extra clothes on if it gets a bit chilly after dusk. We are in wonderful Wales and there are no covered audience areas, so it’s usually wise to bring your favourite trusty anorak just in case a sudden summer shower decides to make a guest appearance. We only cancel performances due to the weather in the most extreme circumstances, so don’t let a little bit of rain put you off. Over the years, we’ve found a cheeky downpour adds an special something to the performances, making for a more unique and memorable experience.

Theatre performances aren’t half as much fun if you’re not sitting comfortably. You can hire deckchairs at Bryngarw for £5 each, or we’d advise you bring a folding chair or picnic blanket to sit on. We ask that any chairs are low backed so that they don’t impede the view of anyone in the audience behind you.

No outdoor theatre performance is complete without some tasty snacks and drinks to help things along. Lots of our audience members like to pack a suitably extravagant picnic to nibble on while they enjoy the show. If bringing a picnic isn’t your thing, you can buy plenty of delicious refreshments when you get here. We have burgers, hot dogs, coffee, cake, ice cream and sweets available as well as a range of bottled Welsh beers, some classic cocktails and non-alcoholic mocktails.

So, if you want to savour some summer theatre at Bryngarw Country Park, why not book your tickets today via our online box office? Rain or shine, our outdoor performances offer a uniquely fun, friendly and laid-back experience in stunning surroundings.
