Bryngarw Country Park has a wealth of woodland habitats with mature sweet chestnuts, ancient oaks and towering beeches. Carpeted with bluebells in spring, the woodlands are home to a diverse range of wildlife including foxes, squirrels and woodpeckers. Besides the river lies our ecologically important wet woodland site.

Sweeping up the hillside away from the hustle and bustle of the park are large areas of grassland. This includes our native wildflower meadows bordered by ancient species-rich hedgerow – an increasingly rare natural habitat. There are also plenty of open spaces simply for relaxation and where children can run and play.

Oriental Garden

A series of interlinked paths and ponds weave through the tranquil oriental style garden, part of which dates from 1910. The garden has something for every season from the blossoms of rhododendrons, magnolia and azaleas in spring and summer, to the fiery reds, gold’s and orange of maple leaves in autumn. The ornamental bridge and tea house provide a focal point for an exquisite display of trees, shrubs, flowers and decorative stones and lanterns.

The River Garw is an iconic feature of the park fringed by wooded banks, alder carr and rocky gorges. The river plays host to otters, dippers and kingfishers, while pebble banks and secluded meanders provide a tranquil setting for visitors. Herons can often be seen fishing on the ornamental lake close to the house which also has healthy populations of waterfowl including mallard, Muscovy and Indian runner ducks.

Picnics and BBQ Area

The park is the perfect venue for an outdoor picnic. Benches are provided near the children’s play area or further afield for a more peaceful setting. Alternatively, BBQ plinths are available for hire to make the most of the summer sunshine. For more information on hiring, please contact the Rangers office on 01656 725155.

Children’s Playground

While the entire park is a playground for younger visitors, our dedicated play area will keep the children entertained while you take care of the picnic or BBQ. With swings, slides and multi-play units there is something for everyone – our famous tower slide is a must!

Eating Out

Lunches and refreshments are available from Cedars Tearoom based inside the visitor centre.

There are walks through three very different aspects of Bryngarw.

These walks have been designed to help you in your exploration of the park and introduce you to its diversity of wildlife and wide variety of landscapes. Colour banded waymarker posts will help you find your way around; red for the meadows, green for the woodlands and blue for the riverside.
